Throwing Heat

Middle schooler Jack can throw some heat. At the school carnival he proves it against the radar gun-75 mph. When he steps up to the mound, he is confident that his pitch will be tough to hit. But, in the new season it seems that some of the hitters are catching up to him and he can't get kids out the way he used to by throwing his fastball. Jack is determined to throw hard and throw fast until he meets his sister's new boyfriend, Finn, who coaches the local college baseball team. Finn used to pitch in college too and Jack looks his stats up on the computer. He's not impressed. But, when Jack finally realizes his way won't win games any longer, he turns to Finn for help. In the same way, Sandy Koufax got some advice from a catcher forty years ago and that advice turned him into one of the greatest pitchers to ever play the game. Just throwing heat doesn't win the game. 125 pages Ages 8-12
