Several years ago there was the world of haves and have-nots. The haves were called the Ones (people who were augmented with technology and genetic implants that barely made them human) and then there was everyone else - they served the Ones. Lozen’s family was part of the ‘everyone else’ group. She came from a strong family of Apache-Chiricahua ancestry. She was taught all of the ancient skills that would be needed to survive after the “Cloud”.

The day the Cloud came everything changed. It wiped out all of the earth’s electronics so if you were a super human ‘One,’ you did not survive. The few that did survive were now the rulers. Lozen and her family live in the Sonoran desert in Arizona in an old prison compound. They are being ruled by the four evil semihuman rulers of Haven. The onetime genetically modified pets have now grown and are a danger to the survivors. They are called Gemods (genetically modified animal monsters).

Lozen has the skills and training to kill them so she is sent out on one mission after another to keep them in check. That is the only thing keeping her safe while her family is being held hostage in the compound. They will be safe if she follows all the orders she is given. There is plenty of action and Lozen is a very strong minded heroine who seems to have all the skills she needs to take anyone and anything on. But that does not mean she doesn’t meet many challenges. Some of them seem to be insurmountable and many times you wonder “how can she survive?” ---from the publisher

*************

Years ago, seventeen year old Apache hunter Lozen and her family lives in a world of haves and have-nots. There were the Ones (people so augmented with technology and genetic enhancements that they were barely human) and there was everyone else who served the Ones. Then the Cloud came, and everything changed. Tech stopped working. The world plunged back into a new steam age. The Ones' pets — genetically engineered monsters — turned on them and are now loose on the world.

Lozen was not one of the lucky ones pre-C, but fate has given her a unique set of survival skills and magical abilities. She hunts monsters for the Ones who survived the apocalyptic events of the Cloud, which ensures the safety of her kidnapped family. But with every monster she takes down, Lozen's powers grow, and she connects those powers to an ancient legend of her people. It soon becomes clear to Lozen that she is not just a hired gun… Lozen is meant to be a hero. --from the publisher
