A year ago Cedar's father and her autistic  brother were killed in a car accident.  Cedar, her younger brother and their mother are still living with the grief.  So, this summer Mom decides to move them all back to her old hometown of Iron Creek with a hope of a fresh start.

AS they settle in to their new home, Cedar notices a boy - oddly dressed- riding by her house on his bike at the same time everyday. Cedar becomes friends with the boy, Leo, and gets a job at the Summerlost Theater Festival where Leo is working.  The friendship grows as they work together to solve a mystery and start a business running tours to celebrate the life of a local celebrity. Leo runs the tours to earn enough money to prove something to his father.

Oddly, Cedar keeps finding special objects o her windowsill.  Could her dead brother Ben be sending her a message from beyond?

This is a touching story about two children who are finding their way through emotional pain.  The background story of the mystery provides a touch of intrigue but it's the revelations about how Cedar felt about having an autistic brother, her grief and Leo's struggle that give it the great heart.

Sometimes it takes a new friend to bring you home. It's the first real summer since the accident that killed Cedar's father and younger brother, Ben. Cedar and what’s left of her family are returning to the town of Iron Creek for the summer. They’re just settling into their new house when a boy named Leo, dressed in costume, rides by on his bike. Intrigued, Cedar follows him to the renowned Summerlost theatre festival. Soon, she not only has a new friend in Leo and a job working concessions at the festival, she finds herself surrounded by mystery. The mystery of the tragic, too-short life of the Hollywood actress who haunts the halls of Summerlost. And the mystery of the strange gifts that keep appearing for Cedar.

Infused with emotion and rich with understanding, Summerlost is the touching new novel from Ally Condie, the international bestselling author of the Matched series that highlights the strength of family and personal resilience in the face of tragedy.
