Along for the Ride

Auden is seventeen and on the verge of her last summer before college. Her father has a new baby with his second wife and Auden is going to spend the summer with him for a chance to spend some more time together. The Auden that arrives is a lesser version of herself. She has never really experienced being a teenager...hardly got a chance to be a child either. There are so many things she has never done.

This is a story of two people, Auden and Eli. Eli is trying to heal from and move on from a tragic accident. Auden is trying to reclaim the experiences she's never let herself have. The two join each other night after night in the wee hours for a slowly evolving friendship built out of honesty, risk and comfort. They eat pie and do the laundry. *Auden is also watching her father in his new relationship and beginning to see him as a person not just as Dad. She's getting to know her mother and her brother a little better too as they begin to evolve beyond the selves they have been in the conflict filled years of Auden's growing up years.

Nobody can write teenage girl dialogue like Sarah Dessen. She really has the details of experiences down and you can see and feel the character's in action. This is a great summer growing up story with teen characters that ring true, a summer prom, parents who are imperfect, and a girl you root for.
