Twins, Caroline and Sarah Louise (Wheeze) grow up in a small fishing town on the Chesapeake Bay back in the 1940's. For Caroline everything seems to come easily. She is musically gifted with a beautiful voice, which gives her opportunities in school, in the town, and then leads her away to the finest schools and love. Wheeze, on the other hand, struggles with life. Caroline seems to take everything, leaving Wheeze with a life of working in the world of the waterman alongside her father and accepting her second place status in her family, town, and world.
