Fun, fun, fun! Shiver Me Timbers makes me want to sport an eyepatch and hunt for buried treasure. Pirates are celebrated, toasted, boasted about, and brought to life with colorful paintings by illustrator Robert Neubecker whose eye for detail and panache for color make Shiver Me Timbers! a true delight! Elorian's poetry sings itself off the page and readers will love learning the most intricate details of pirate life. In "Pirate Patter," Elorian gives the definition of many pirate-isms: "Ahoy, matey means Hello, my friend. Heave to means come to an end. A cat-o-nine-tails is a whip. A man-o'-war is a sailing ship..." Pirates are out to sea for many months and their meals ends up being a diet of fish. In "Pirates' Meal," after a week's worth of fish for dinner, a pirate laments, "If we have fish for one more day Methinks that I will puke." Pirates' lives are full of adventure and excitement; kids will be delighted by the fun pirates and clever poetry. Ahhh, it's a pirate's life for me. Grades 3-up. This is a great read aloud for younger kids. Great for any poetry collection.
