Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas inspired this story. Today is Alice's birthday and it looks and feels like Gertrude, her very dear friend, has forgotten. Alice wakes up happy and ready for a day of surprises. But breakfast comes and goes and Gertrude is full of silence.
It's April in Paris and the trees have come alive with purple blossoms. Gertrude and Alice live together and Gertrude spends her time writing at night and thinking about writing by day. Alice encourages. Alice does all the cooking and runs the errands. It's a perfect match.
Alice heads out for a walk through her city and Gertrude sets forth to create a wonderful party for her friend and as she wanders she works on a poem in her head. The poem unfortunately becomes more and more difficult to refine and as Gertrude writes and rewrites and searches for the best words, her party plans go up in smoke.
Will the day be full of surprises or will it collapse in a heap of rhyme and ruin?
