Author/illustrator Denise Fleming is a juggernaut in the world of children’s books—a Caldecott honoree with over 20 books under her belt. Her work is a sure thing for preschoolers, and Go, Shapes, Go! is no exception. Using brightly colored collage, she spins shapes into a cute narrative that is good for little ones who are just getting familiar with their shapes and colors. A cute little wind-up mouse has a pile of different shapes to play with: circles, squares, ovals, and more that she turns into a big monkey friend. When the mouse and monkey collide, chaos ensues! What will the shapes turn into next? Go, Shapes, Go! uses its text sparingly, letting the pictures tell the story while still conveying preschool topics like shape, size, and action words to the young reader. It’s a lot of fun for little ones and is be great to pair with an activity encouraging them to manipulate their own shapes to see what they can create. Thoughts from a 3-year-old: My son is a very active little fellow, and he enjoyed the colorful chaos throughout. The book is short, active, and engaging, and he enjoyed looking at the pictures to see what would happen next.
