William Powell dreamed of becoming a professional golfer, but the only way he could set foot on a golf course, was to be some white man’s caddy. That didn’t stop him from dreaming , and playing. When he was an adult, he built his own golf course and allowed any person to play, regardless of their skin color. Eventually Willie was allowed into the PGA and his daughter Renee became a world class golfer in her own right. Few may know about William Powell and his golf course Clearview. This beautiful story makes the reader aware of this significant part of civil rights history, as well as the history of the sport of golf. William Powell is an excellent model of setting a goal and taking steps towards the achievement of that goal.
Willie Powell had been told, “If you are going to get ahead in this world, you can’t be as good as the white children; you have to be twice as good.” He took this advice to heart.
