“Little John” is so proud that his mom is a stonecutter for St. John’s Cathedral in New York City (“Big John”). He sees her put in long hours, and watches how tired she is during her workweek. When he finally gets to see her one stone, he is disappointed at how plain it is and in the fact that she will not be recognized for her work. Once he gets to experience the vastness and the beauty of the cathedral, he realizes that her work is important for society and takes pride in it. The illustrations are beautiful and this story will introduce children to a new art form and help them appreciate the timeframe for buildings to emerge.
