Fifty Cents and a Dream: Young Booker T. Washington

Booker dreamed of making friends with words, setting free the secrets that lived in books. With fifty cents in his pocket and a dream in his soul, Booker felt the magic welcome him in.

Booker T. Washington grows up a slave that is forbidden the pleasure of learning to read but he has a deep desire to unlock the secrets of the letters dancing across the pages. When he is finally free, he hears of a school for young blacks who want to learn more about science, farming, and books. Booker sets off walking the five hundred miles from his home to Hampton Institute with little but his dream to keep him going. When he finally arrives, all he owns is fifty cents earned from doing odd jobs along the way and his dream. His hard work as a janitor earns him his room and board and the generous scholarship of a wealthy man provided his tuition. Booker succeeds and eventually becomes an educator himself. Often looked down upon by the African-American community for his willingness to compromise, Booker was a true visionary leader who saw that a solid education could free any man. This biography is beautifully illustrated by Bryan Collier.
