Harper Collins 2004
Fiction/Non-Fiction
Kitten sees something amazing in the night sky. It is round and white, so it must be a bowl of milk. There is only one problem: how to reach it. Her attempts result in a bug on her tongue, a tumble down the porch steps, and a dunking in a pond. Only after the kitten returns home wet and unhappy does she find a welcoming bowl of milk waiting for her.
Kevin Henkes' brief text and refrain of "Poor Kitten!" make this Caldecott Medal winner ideal for storytime and for young children to read on their own. Ingenious black-and-white illustrations are perfectly suited to the nighttime setting, and the expressions on the kitten's face are exquisite. 40 pages. Ages 3-6
