This is a story about a family that left all they knew in Japan, land of tradition, and began a new life in the United States. Father came from a "rural village near Tokyo and a family with meager means. At the age of 15 he left his village and became apprenticed to a sushi chef. It was hard work and he began by scrubbing the kitchen floors, cooking the rice and watching the masters at their craft. After ten years he was chosen to go to New York City to be the chef for a brand new sushi restaurant opening there. What a new and exciting place and how different from the customs of Japan where only males were permitted to make sushi. Eventually he married and had a family and that's where his daughter Hiromi makes her entrance and eventually develops a love for the fish markets and the world of sushi.
