Lyle has a job as a dogwalker. For several reasons (such as love of dogs, walking and being helpful to others) Lyle walks the same number of dogs as the day's number(i.e. second day with two dogs, fifth day with five dogs, etc.), but there are difficulties every day. There are directions embedded in the text to count the dogs. The book concludes with a squirrel chase and a final count of the dogs' pictures.
