Clever Beatrice

Clever Beatrice and her mother are about to finish the very last of their porridge and her mother is going to have to head up north to find work so they will not starve. There are only two ways to make money in the north. One is to cut down trees as a lumberjack and the other is to bet with the rich giant who lives on the other side of the woods. Now though this giant is very rich he is not very smart and Beatrice decides to try her luck. In three separate dares, she outwits the giant each time using her sharp wits and then, hands filled with gold coins, she races home to tell her mother and to bask in her mother's pride. A great story about self-confidence. 40 pages Ages 4-8
