On a beautiful sunshiny day Tricia Ann gets all dressed up and asks her Mama Frances if she can to to Someplace Special today all by herself. Going means riding the bus all alone and finding her way to the public gardens on her own. Mama Frances tells her "Goin'off alone is a mighty big step," but she sends her out the door. Tricia Ann steps up into the bus and follows the Jim Crow signs to the back where colored people are supposed to sit. She makes her way downtown and gets off at her special park where she twirls around a beautiful fountain and falls onto a nearby bench only to see the sign For Whites Only. Tricia Ann begins to feel angry that her world is so small and the beautiful places are off limits to her. Is there any special place in this city that has its door open to her?
