In the concentration camp of Mauthausen in Austria in the spring of 1945 an amazing thing happened. Allied troops marched into the camp to liberate the survivors and were surprised to be handed an American flag that had been secretly sewn by the prisoners. They had used scraps and bits that they accumulated to make the flag. They had the number of stripes correct-thirteen-but the number of stars was fifty-six. This is a moving and powerful story about the resilience of these amazing human beings and a testimony to the horror of the Holocaust.
