In this classic story, the little house stands out in the beautiful countryside ready for her family. Year after year the city seems to get closer and closer to the house, and you have a sense that this is not a good thing. Eventually the little house is completely surrounded by and overwhelmed by the city. Her family leaves, and she's all alone. But there is always hope, and, happily, someone remembers her and takes her to where she belongs. Considering this book was written in the early 40's, its message is important. Children care about the house and enjoy the security and goodness of her world. This book is the 1943 winner of the Caldecott Medal.
