Lipman Pike: America's First Home Run King

“Lip…felt butterflies rise in his stomach and his knees go weak…but as he stepped up to the plate, he forgot all about being nervous, and he hit the first pitch high over the right-fielder’s head.”

In this biography, readers meet Lipman Pike, a young Jewish boy living in 19th century New York. Lipman is fast as a racehorse, and soon discovers baseball, or Base as it is called. When he gets a chance to play professionally, he reminds his Jewish father that he left Europe to follow his dreams, and Lipman should be allowed to follow his dreams as well. This book makes a great read aloud to sports fans and history fans alike. In fact, kids won’t even realize they are getting a history lesson.
