Picture Book of Cesar Chavez

Cesar Chavez started life on a farm but the Great Depression took that from his family and they were forced to take to the road as migrant workers. Chavez attended 165 schools as he grew up and spent time in the fields picking beans, broccoli, lettuce, cauliflower, onions, carrots, and many more. In school he was punished for speaking his native language, Spanish. His parents though modeled dignity and when a farm boss was particularly difficult, the family would move on rather than subject themselves to poor treatment. As he grew up, he began to look for ways to improve his place in society and he fought for better conditions for farm workers, eventually starting several unions to push for fair wages and better working conditions. As years passed, Chavez staged boycotts and sit-ins and went door to door to urge farm workers to register to vote. He was a gentle champion for those who toiled on the farms and when he died in 1993, he was honored by forty thousand people.
