Old Abe, Eagle Hero

A young eaglet gathered from a nest by a Native American named Chief Sky, was sent to fight for the Union forces in the American Civil War. Nicknamed Old Abe, the eagle was the mascot of a troop from Wisconsin. He proved himself to be very able in battle and no man who carried his perch was ever harmed while he had hold of the bird. Word spread among the Southerners and they were ordered to capture the eagle who inspired the Northerners to fight doggedly in battle. But Old Abe was a crafty fellow, even whistling to warn his fellow soldiers of a stranger nearby when they were close to a Southern unit. Old Abe inspired his friends to courage in battle and after many years at war, he was retired to the capitol building in Wisconsin and given a two room apartment. Later he was used to raise money to save the Old South Church in Boston. Old Abe made some history all his own. 48 pages Ages 6-10
