Almost Astronauts: 13 Women Who Dared To Dream

Quick quiz: Which astronaut had the most hours in the air as a pilot in the early 1960's? (Play the Jeopardy music in your head.) Was it John Glenn? How about Scott Carpenter? Okay, you have your answer ready? Well, it was Jerry Carpenter, female pilot who was one of the thirteen women who competed to win admission into NASA's first astronaut training program. These courageous females went through the same rigorous testing as the men but because of some politicians they never got a fair chance. I did an interview with Tanya Lee Stone, author of this book, which you can watch by going to the Books Alive tab on the homepage and scrolling through to Tanya's picture. I also interviewed Dr. Mary Cleave, one of America's female astronauts, who went twice into space. The interview with Dr. Cleave is also on Books Alive. Ages 8-12 144 pages
