Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau

This book would be a wonderful read-aloud to hook younger students (ages 5, 6, 7) at the beginning of a unit about oceans and ocean life.It would also be useful with a unit on biographies with young independent readers.Readers follow the life of undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau. The story begins with Jacques being a young, sick boy in France. To build strength, he begins to swim and finds that he loves the sea. After being injured in a serious car accident as a young man, Jacques is told that he will have to wear an arm bracefor the rest of his life. Jacques refuses to accept this fate and again turnsto swimming. After receiving goggles from a friend, Jacques is fascinated by what he can see under the surface ofthe water and is inspired to spend the remainder of his life exploring anddiscovering the magical world under the sea.In an easy to understand manner, the author shares interestingfacts about Cousteau’s discoveries and inventions.Direct quotes from Cousteau are included on most pages. (This book can be enjoyed by independent readers. It could also be used with younger students as a read-aloud.Older reluctant readers - especially boys - could like this because it does not look like a “baby” book.) 40 pages
