| Margaret Chase Smith was born in Maine in 1897 and grew up knowing the value of a dollar and the loss of two siblings. She married and joined her husband in Washington D.C. when he was elected to Congress. Her husband died early and she took over hiis Congressional seat. Her voice was heard on many important issues from sending a man to the moon to defying the Red Scare. She sought the nomination to run for President in 1964 but did not succeed. But her legacy was one of hard work, dignity and determination. |
