Jimmy Winkfield was born in 1882, the youngest of seventeen children. He was African American and he was small for his age. But, put him on a horse and he felt big and powerful. He was determined to ride and he watched the jockeys around him and learned from them. At the age of 19, he rode in the Kentucky Derby. That was in 1901 and the reign of black jockeys in America was coming to an end. Prejudice and discrimination had found their way to the racetrack in America.
