That beautiful pumpkin out in the patch started out down in the earth as a seed. Then the seed cracked open and down went the roots and up went the shoots. Two leaves popped out and then the pumpkin plant started using the tubes in its stalk to send nutrients up and down so it could make food to grow. Watch the flowers open at night and in the early morning and then close up tight in the heat. Then the petals dry up and little pumpkins begin to form. Here come the pumpkins! They’ll be fun for Halloween and for Thanksgiving pies. Next spring we’ll start the growing all over again with a whole new field of pumpkins.
