The year is 1907. Thirteen-year-old Anna has been running the household and caring for her brother, Matti, age 9, since her mother passed away the year before. Longing to be able to return to school, Anna, together with her brother, try to find a new wife for her father. However, when Papa shows signs of being interested in remarrying, Anna begins to wonder if this is what she really wants. Set in Minnesota, the story describes the harshness and difficulties of the lives of the Finnish iron miners. 136 pages
