This is a classic in my opinion, and it's great historical fiction for those 3rd graders who get the assignment. Life on the prairie is hard, and Pa has decided he needs a wife and mother for his children, since Ma has passed away. So, Pa sends a letter and Sarah is on her way west from Maine to see if she can make a life with them. This is a beautiful, poignant story that will reach the heart of most readers, as we follow the children's concerns and learn about the power in the simplest things. This book is the 1986 Newbery Medal Winner. 64 pages Ages 9-11
