Eleven-year-old Jack is trying to grow up in the times of the Dust Bowl. His father is beaten and weary and thinks Jack is incompetent and useless. His sister, Dorothy, bed-ridden, is ill with dust pneumonia and Jack spends time reading the Wizard of Oz books with her. Jack is also mercilessly bullied by a gang of boys in town. Things are pretty bleak and the drab colors of this somber but gripping graphic novel carry that sense of loss. But, there is one man in town who believes in Jack. He tells this Jack tall tales about other Jacks and he believes Jack will someday do something to save everyone. Change comes when Jack follows his instincts and his little sister out to the barn where something threatening, something dark is lurking. Drip, drip, drip. This drip is the hint of a storm about to be unleashed and the tall tale strength of Jack is about to be unleashed right along with it as he takes control of that storm and then turns it loose for the good of all. Wow-what a book. It has the pictures some of our readers yearn for and the substance that we hope for. Beautifully done.
