Franny and Jennie were not only neighbors, they were best friends--until each of their families moved. Franny is now living in a rustic cabin (as in no television) in Loma Prieta, somewhere between San Jose and Santa Cruz and, after five years of being apart, Jennie is coming to visit. As the fourteen-year-olds are becoming reacquainted, and enjoying having the cabin to themselves while their parents attend the World Series game in San Francisco, the Loma Prieta earthquake of October 17, 1989 strikes.
