Magical Ms. Plum

There is something special about Ms. Plum's third-grade class every year and everyone wants to get her for their teacher. She teaches the same things as all the other third-grade teachers at Springtime Elementary, but she has a very special supply closet. On the first day of school as the children are settling in, Ms. Plum looks out of her sparkly glasses and asks, "Who wants to get me a pencil?" Nadia is afraid to raise her hand. Jeremy thinks why bother, why bother with anything at all? Becky Oh thinks shouldn't teachers have their own pencils? Mindy Minn is carefully arranging her desk. Carlos raises his hand because that's how you show teachers you are one of the smart ones. Jovi doesn't understand the question. Ms. Plum chooses Tashala, a little girl who wants to be a cowboy. A little girl who gets picked on by Brad who calls her Cow-Butt. Tashala disappears into the supply closet and when she comes out, she is being followed by a galloping little horse about the size of her mother's purse. Some teachers have the gift of understanding children. They see down deep inside of them and they can figure out just what to prescribe. The magic closet and Ms. Plum have that gift and it is deeply reassuring to watch child after child find his/her way into that closet to retrieve just the right thing to set them on their happy path to success. Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle lives. Absolutely delightful and a great read aloud. This one could create some wondrous discussions and perhaps some magnificent change.
