Maya has spent her childhood under the harsh domination of her grandmother. No mention of her mother is allowed, and Maya treasures the box of plastic horses and the one photograph that are all she has to connect her to the mother she lost in a car accident. Then, grandmother dies, and Maya is sent to live with her relatives in Wyoming. There's her grandfather, Moose, and her great-uncle, Fig. They take her out to spend the summer at a camp with her Aunt Vi and her cousin, Payton. Payton isn't the easiest person to live with and neither is Maya. Both need time with horses to find the "quiet place" inside themselves.
