The tribe of Montmers are furry creatures who live underground, and their leader Jolaine is old and about to die. She sends for Perloo, a scholarly Montmer, who enjoys the pursuit of reading. He is not an adventurer by birth. When Jolaine names Perloo to rule the tribe upon her death, she enrages her son, Berwig, who has every intention of taking control. Thus begins this very adventurous tale of the battle between Berwig and Perloo the Bold.
