In the Land of the Lawn Weenies and Other Warped and Creepy Tales

This is a great collection of short stories with “Twilight Zone” twists. When I go out to book talk this book to kids, I always tell the first story to give them a feel for what they’re in for. A young girl goes to an antique market with her mother and accidentally breaks a small crystal horse. She looks around, hoping no one saw her do it, and, unfortunately, an old woman is watching her. The old woman makes a strange gesture with her hands . Does she put some sort of spell on the girl? Once the girl gets home, strange things start to happen. First, her teddy bear goes missing. Then her waffle disappears. She begins to realize that there is a new power in her own touch - but only when she touches something she loves. Great for reluctant readers.

And from David Lubar himself: At last -- a book that answers the important questions: Is school more fun when you’re a giant lizard? What would happen if you lost your dad’s hand? Is it really that important to mow the lawn? Curl up with thirty-five weird stories full of vampires, werewolves, insects, reptiles and little brothers.
