Candle Man, Book One: The Society of Unrelenting Vigilance

Theo has only been allowed out of Empire Hall for thirty minutes a year on his birthday. The rest of the time he spends in his room reading old books about mythological creatures and drinking hot water. His guardian, Mr. Saint, is the leader of the Society of Good Works. On the night we meet Theo, burglars break into his home and suddenly Theo's world turns upside down. You see Theo reaches out to touch one of the burglars and as he does, the man suddenly freezes and then melts away into nothing. Theo is The Candle Man and he is about to be catapulted into a world of garghouls and smoglodytes and the Society of Unrelenting Vigilance. If he and Chloe, a member of the Society of Unrelenting Vigilance, can find enough evidence, they can finally convince the police force to bring charges against Mr. Saint and his charming colleagues. But first, Chloe and Theo will descend into a labyrinth of secret tunnels under the city and will face bands of eerie creatures and a great stench. The whole thing feels very Victorian and I've been told this is an example of "steampunk."
